We had two weeks in front of us. Different people want different things. We both like to have some really lazy days on the beach, but we also wanted to explore the island, and we concentrated mainly on the western part this time. We rented a car and had the freedom to go wherever we wanted!! This time we also tried out renting a room somewhere instead of driving back in the dark to find "our hotel". It was a good idea, so easy, and so pleasant to find a clean spacious room with a balcony and a view so beautiful that it will always be remembered!! The bathroom was okay and no shortage of hot water (unlike "our hotel").

Take a small bag in the car with what you need for an overnight stay somewhere... and just go for it! It's nice to relax in a new place, a place you pick, and want to explore. You will probably experience that it's easy to find, cheap and good accomodation. This is usually even cheaper if you're staying more than one night. Who knows, maybe you want to try out island-strolling another time? It's a good idea to read and surf for information before you go, and ask the locals when you're there.
